Manchester United have confirmed Mason Greenwood will receive a new squad number for the upcoming Premier League season.
Manchester United fans believe Mason Greenwood’s switch to the No.11 shirt number means Jadon Sancho will be the club’s new No.7.
United announced that both Greenwood and Brandon Williams will wear new squad numbers for the 2020/21 campaign.
Greenwood, 18, was handed the No.11 jersey previously worn by United legends Ryan Giggs, George Best and Sir Bobby Charlton. The number was vacant after Anthony Martial took the No.9 shirt following Romelu Lukaku’s departure to Inter Milan.
Williams will be given the No.33 shirt previously held by Paddy McNair.
The No.11 shirt was one of the potential options for Sancho to take if he completed a transfer to United from Borussia Dortmund this summer.
Sancho remains a priority transfer target for United who still hope to finalise a deal for the 20-year-old before the window shuts on October 5. MEN Sport understand United have still not found a resolution over Sancho’s salary expectations and the agents’ fees during talks with his representative Emeka Obasi and the intermediary Marco Lichtsteiner, acting on behalf of Dortmund.
United fans believe that the only logical option for Sancho is No.7 shirt following Greenwood’s switch to No.11.

United great Rio Ferdinand believes Sancho should only take the number previously worn by the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo if he can commit his long-term future to the club.
He said back in May: “Yes, I would [give him no.7], he’s that type of character.
“He’s got an arrogance about him, it’s what you want on a football pitch, they’d embrace that. So yes, I’d give it to him and put that pressure right on his shoulders!”
